I often get the question
of what tackle do I need to get started in motor
trolling for salmon and trout. This series of articles
will take you from bare essentials to no budget, all
inclusive fishing equipment.
Bluegill Smiles
By Keith "Catfish"
Sutton
Headline: We all enjoy catching big fish,
but sometimes it’s little fish like bluegills that create the most vivid
memories.
Last week, Zach and I went bluegill fishing.
Our trip brought back some wonderful memories, and created some
wonderful memories of its own.
Getting Bogged
Down in "The Bogs"
By A. Sayward Lamb
On Monday morning, July
6th, of this year, my friend Ivan Morey, and myself
headed out on a brook fishing trip up in the Rangeley
region of Maine, to do some fly fishing for Eastern
Brook Trout, more commonly called Red Spots, or Brook
Trout, by the natives.
Emerson Family Fishing on
Parmachenee Lake - 2007
By Kevin Emerson
This year we spent ten
days at my Dad's lodge located on Parmachenee Lake in
Oxford County. This year's trek was full of first for
our family.
We had two family members making their first trips to
Maine. Our son-in-law James made his first trip to camp
memorable by landing a beautiful 15 1/2" brook trout in
his final hour of fishing before heading home.
What Lures Do Milwaukee
Charters Use?
By Capt. Jim Hirt
Charter captains have been
known for guarding their secret lures for as long as
there have been charters. Now is the time for passing on
that information. This article contains detailed
descriptions of the hottest producer for salmon and
trout wherever you fish for them.
2007 Free Family Fishing Festival
By Tom Remington
Bethel, Maine and the BIG
Adventure Center were the locations for the 2007 Free
Family Fishing Festival. With showers on Friday night, I
was fearful of another rainy day for the Family Fishing
Festival but that wasn’t to be.
When Fishing is
Slow, Spread The Tackle
By Capt. Jim Hirt
I usually fish 100 feet of water or more
because most days all five types of fish are there. This gives me the
most possible opportunities to produce fish. Deep water on summer days
holds temperature changes from top to bottom creating the correct
conditions for all Lake Michigan game fish. There are also some fish
that do not hold very often in less than 100 feet of water.
Basic Leadcore Rigging With Spoons
By Capt. Jim Hirt
The hot rig for the last several years has
been leadcore. With the influx of Zebra Muscles, the waters of the Great
Lakes have become very clear. In my opinion the toughest conditions are
calm clear sunny days. On these types of days leadcore is the way to go.
I do not recommend this presentation for first light.

switch gears and discuss location and presentation for
Salmon in the last several months of their life.
Salmon Fishing Lure Speed By
Species
By Capt. Jim Hirt
In previous articles we
covered my three most productive lures for July and
August. I will give a quick recap for those who missed
the last issue. My first choice is an 8-inch Luhr Jensen
flasher green with silver and glow tape with a green
fly.
Milwaukee Fishing
Charters - Fishing Report and More Hot Lures
By Capt. Jim Hirt
In previous articles we
covered the LTLR. Now let’s focus on three of my
favorite lures. In this article I would like to help you
with what lures to run for a typical July or August trip
on Lake Michigan.
Canoeing
By A. Sayward Lamb
My first interest in
canoes began several years ago when my two sons belonged
to a Boy Scout troop in West Paris, Maine. I was the
Secretary-Treasurer of the Troop Committee and Milton

From the Water to the
Wall: Caring For Your Trophy Fish
By Keith "Catfish"
Sutton
Can any angler really
resist the temptation to brag about a trophy catch? Is
there truly one among us who doesn't long for a lifelike
mount to display on the den or office wall, a mount that
reminds of the time, the place and the battle? And if
that mounted fish provides an opening to retell the
story our friends and families know by heart, so much
the better!
Milwaukee Fishing
Charters - Hot Salmon Lures
By Captain Jim Hirt
In previous articles
we covered where to start if you have not been out
for awhile. In this article I would like to help you
with what lures to buy at the tackle store for a
typical July or August trip on Lake Michigan. This
is a very difficult question. Where I cannot
possibly go into all species and all situations,
perhaps I can define what I believe will catch fish
90 percent of the time.
The Old Guys
By Rod Davis
I was trying hard to fall asleep, really I was. No
kidding. It’s really hard to doze off when you are 12
years old and staying with the “men” at CAMP. The
flickering fire cast shadows on the wall that were
comforting. The men in the room were snoring loudly. I
was tucked into a sleeping bag on a bunk bed in the
corner lying near my Dad.
Cold Start Finding Fish
- Fishing Milwaukee
By Capt. Jim Hirt
In previous articles we
covered basic leadcore. I would recommend trying a
leadcore line set up. This presentation will work when
all others are dead.
In this article I would like to explain where to start
if you have not been out for awhile. I find Internet
fish reports invaluable for up to date information. Look
for the most recent reports. If you do not have that
option, ask at the local sporting goods stores or the
other fisherman at the launch ramps. Marine radio is
also helpful if you have one.
Top To Bottom
By A. Sayward Lamb
What is there about water
that governs our feelings? - Especially when we enjoy a
spectacular view across a lake or the flowing waters of
a river or stream? Our feelings directly respond to what
we see at that particular moment. For instance, if the
body of water is calm, with surrounding terrain being
mirrored upon the surface, we often find ourselves
feeling relaxed, and calmed.
Catching Catfish
for the Table
by Keith “Catfish” Sutton
Some catfishing enthusiasts target trophy-class fish almost exclusively.
For them, nothing makes a trip better than landing a huge blue cat,
flathead or channel cat.
Many anglers have a different goal in mind. On most of their outings,
they hope to catch enough eating-size cats, what we call “fiddlers” in
the South, to provide the makings for a fish fry. If a trophy cat takes
the bait now and then, so much the better; that just adds to the fun and
excitement. But the main objective is catching fish for the table.
Free Family
Fishing Festival
By Thomas K. Remington
What began as a hopeful
500-plus enthusiastic anglers and would-be fishers,
hoping to learn more about fishing, catching a few brook
trout and delving into tying their own flies, turned out
to be who had the best rain gear.
I recalled the days when I worked in construction to one
who attended the festival that this kind of weather was
too nasty to work in, so I, along with many others,
would leave work and go fishing.
The Fine and Precise
Art of Fly Fishing
By Thomas K. Remngton
If you’re not a purist
when it comes to fly fishing, those who are might just
drive you a bit crazy. I would guess there are far fewer
“nuts” when it comes to fly fishing than those simply
looking for a good time and a chance to catch a fish or
two with their very sensitive fly fishing equipment. Fly
fishing is just plain fun....read

People are gathered here
in Gilead, Maine on the banks of the beautiful
Androscoggin River, that just a few short years ago was
on the list of the ten most polluted rivers in the U. S.
Now it is one of the finest and most scenic clear water
rivers in the country.

Alaska - Doing It All Yourself vs. Enlisting a Charter
Service
by Paul Mroczka
Have you ever traveled to
Alaska to do some sport fishing? For the serious
angler—the person who loves fishing—it can be the
experience of a lifetime. There are two primary choices
fishermen have when considering a fishing journey to
Alaska—doing everything yourself in terms of fishing
gear, lures, discovering when and where they’re biting,
etc. or hiring a charter service. In doing it yourself,
you bear the vast majority of responsibility in ensuring
you have a great time. When hiring a guide, you’re
entrusting someone else with the success of your trip....read

Last November I went deer

camp located at Chain of Ponds, but did most of our
hunting only a few miles south of the Canadian border.
Hunting conditions were about perfect, because the
weather wasn't cold and we had about six inches of snow
on the ground. The area we hunted was mountainous and

located at Northwest Cove, across from Seboomook, on Moosehead Lake. In
order to reach his camp, we had to cross that arm of the lake by boat.

Lake Michigan Fishing
Charters - Hooks Make the Difference
By Capt. Jim Hirt
The last article closed
with a promise of exploring the different types of hooks
I use on Lake Michigan and the techniques I use to
sharpen them. This is a somewhat controversial issue for
most fishermen. Everyone has an opinion and I can only
state what works for me.
Our Actions

It was a beautiful June
day, a few years ago, when I was fly fishing for trout
on Nesowadnehunk Lake in Northern Maine. On this
particular afternoon I happened to be fishing alone in
my boat, so I was leisurely cruising to different
locations around the lake. The sky had a few clouds, but
there was still plenty of sunshine. It was a very
comfortable day to be out on the water....read

The last article was a
general discussion of spring presentation with a focus
on planer boards, lines and terminal tackle. This was
good information for a starting point but you will need
more information to produce every trip out. In the next
several articles I would like to help you define when to
use spoons, crankbaits, flasher flies, dodger flies,
squids and a variety of other lures.

Temperature is Key #2
By Capt. Jim Hirt
Let us now go into more
detail on location of temperature breaks and how to work
them. The first and perhaps most important is how to
find these sometimes subtle temperature changes. Your
primary tool, and one you cannot do with out, is a
surface temperature gauge. I use the one built into my
fish locator.
